Skilled Migration
The South Africa Critical Skills List: Full Occupation List and How It Works
The South African Critical Skills List names the occupations that qualify for a Critical Skills Work Visa. A listed occupation scores the full 100 points on the work-visa points system on its own, routing the application to the Critical Skills Work Visa. This guide lists every occupation and explains how the list is used.

In short: The South African Critical Skills List names the occupations the government considers in short supply. It matters because of how the work-visa points system works: since 18 October 2024, an occupation on the Critical Skills List scores the full 100 points on its own, which routes your application to the Critical Skills Work Visa rather than the harder General Work Visa. To qualify you also need a job offer, a SAQA evaluation of your qualification, and registration with the relevant professional body. The current list was gazetted on 2 August 2022 (Government Gazette 47182, Notice 2334) and remains in force.
The Critical Skills List is pivotal to applying under the Critical Skills Work Visa category. For the wider picture of every route into the country, see our guide to migrating to South Africa.
How the Critical Skills List is used in a visa application
Each entry on the list is defined by three things, and you must satisfy all three:
- The educational subject matter (what you are qualified in)
- The specific occupation or critical skill
- The requirements attached to it, such as professional-body membership, experience, and qualifications
A close match is not enough. If your qualification and experience do not map precisely to a listed occupation, and the SAQA evaluation and professional body do not confirm that exact skill, the application is refused. Since 18 October 2024 the Critical Skills Work Visa and General Work Visa share one points-based adjudication, and a listed occupation is worth the full 100 points by itself.

How to check if your occupation qualifies
Read the list above for your exact occupation, then confirm three things before committing to the route:
- SAQA evaluation. Your foreign qualification must be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority. This is the longest single step, often three to six months, and you lodge it yourself.
- Professional body. You must be registered, or confirmed as eligible to register, with the relevant South African professional body for the occupation.
- Job offer. Since the 2023 clarification, the Critical Skills Work Visa is not a work-seeker visa: you need an offer of employment from a South African employer.
Common mistakes
- Reading a near-match as a match. A similar job title in a different category is treated as a different occupation; only the exact listed skill qualifies.
- Relying on an outdated copy of the list. It is revised periodically, and an application citing a removed occupation is refused. The current list dates from August 2022.
- Lodging without a SAQA evaluation or professional-body registration. Both are prerequisites, not later steps.
Frequently asked questions
Is my occupation on the South African Critical Skills List?
Check the full list above against your exact occupation. If it appears, and your SAQA evaluation and professional body confirm that precise skill, you can apply for the Critical Skills Work Visa. If it does not, the General Work Visa, which requires reaching 100 points across qualifications, experience, salary, employer and language, may still be open.
When was the Critical Skills List last updated?
The current list was gazetted on 2 August 2022 (Government Gazette 47182, Government Notice 2334) and remains in force. Confirm the latest position before applying, as the list is revised periodically.
Does being on the list guarantee a visa?
No. A listed occupation scores the full 100 points and routes you to the Critical Skills Work Visa, but you still need a SAQA evaluation, professional-body registration, a job offer, and a clean medical and character check.
