Australia Migration Update

1. Australia’s new National Innovation Visa (NIV)

Introduced in December 2024, the NIV offers a direct pathway to permanent residency for globally recognised individuals with exceptional achievements in fields like research, academia, business, the arts, sports and tech. Replacing the Global Talent Visa, it operates on an invitation-only basis, prioritising recipients of prestigious international awards. The visa aims to position Australia as a global innovation hub by attracting thought leaders in key sectors such as technology, health and renewable energy.

2. Skills in Demand (SID) Visa – Replacing Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) 482

Also launched in December 2024, the SID Visa streamlines skilled migration to tackle labour shortages in Australia. It features three streams - Specialist Skills, Core Skills and Labour Agreement - allowing employer sponsorship when local talent isn’t available. Key benefits include a shorter work experience requirement (now just 1 year) and up to 180 days to secure a new sponsor if needed, offering more flexibility and a clearer path to permanent residency.

3. Skilled Migration in Focus: Australia’s 2025-26 Budget Highlights

Australia’s latest Budget highlights the ongoing importance for skilled migrants, especially in construction, trades and infrastructure. With a goal to build 1.2 million homes, demand for professionals like electricians, plumbers, carpenters and engineers remains high. Employer-sponsored visa pathways continue to be a viable option, supported by a new national licensing scheme aimed at easing interstate work for electrical trades. While no major visa changes were made, future updates are likely. If you have in-demand skills, now’s a great time to explore your migration options.

New Zealand Migration Update

1. Primary School Teachers Now Eligible for Direct Residency

From 26 March 2025, qualified primary, intermediate, and Māori-medium teachers can apply for New Zealand residency through the Green List Straight to Residence Pathway. Applicants must hold a valid New Zealand practising certificate, a job offer paying at least NZD $31.61/hour, and meet role requirements. This update aims to address national teacher shortages, reinforcing New Zealand’s commitment to strengthening its education sector.

2. Major Reforms to the Active Investor Plus Visa

From 1 April 2025, New Zealand’s investor visa has been revamped to attract high-value investors. Two new categories - Growth (Minimum investment: NZD $5 million) and Balanced (Minimum investment: NZD $10 million) - offer expanded investment options, including bonds and property developments. The goal being to boost foreign investment and simplify the investor migration process.

3. New Zealand Welcomes Digital Nomads

New Zealand has welcomed remote workers as of 27 January 2025. Visitors can now legally work remotely while enjoying the unique lifestyle New Zealand offers. This update allows digital nomads to stay productive while enjoying life in NZ, provided they don’t work for or sell goods and services to local businesses. This progressive shift aligns with global remote work trends.
