Australia Migration Update

Australia’s 2025 Election: A Win for Migration

Australia’s May 3rd election delivered a clear message: Migration matters. With the Labor government re-elected with a stronger majority, rejecting proposals to slash migration numbers, there’s renewed optimism for a future-focused immigration program. Labor now has the mandate to address skills shortages, update outdated occupation lists, reform the GSM program, and improve visa pathways. This result affirms what many already know: Migration is vital to Australia’s economy, workforce and future.

National Innovation Visa (NIV): Where Things Stand

Launched in December 2024, the NIV has had a slow and selective start. As of March 2025, just 70 invitations have been issued from 3,510 Expressions of Interest, a success rate of only 2%. Most invitations have gone to candidates in Critical Technologies, Health Industries, and Renewables & Low Emission Technologies. Success appears closely tied to highly specialised expertise in priority areas, such as biotech, genomics, AI in health, quantum computing, robotics, hydrogen and carbon capture. Sectors like FinTech and the Arts have seen little traction so far.

From 1 July, new places will become available with the commencement of the 2025–26 migration program year. While the exact number of places remains to be seen, we are hopeful this will lead to an increase in invitations for the NIV program. If you’re in a priority sector but unsure where you stand, feel free to book a consultation with us so we can guide and support you.

Pathways to Live and Work in Australia

Thinking about making the move to Australia? There are two main options for skilled professionals: the Skilled Migration Program and the new Skills in Demand (SID) Visa. Whether you’re aiming for permanent residence or a temporary pathway that leads there, Australia has opportunities across a wide range of industries.

The Skilled Migration Program offers permanent and provisional visas like the Subclass 189, 190, and 491, with options for independent or state-nominated applicants. The SID Visa, replacing the old 482, allows employer sponsorship under three streams, of which the two most important in our opinion are, Core Skills and Specialist Skills, and can also lead to permanent residence.

New Zealand Migration Update

Pathways to Live and Work in New Zealand

New Zealand’s Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) is a great entry point for skilled professionals seeking temporary work and in many cases, can serve as a stepping stone toward residence in New Zealand. With a job offer from an accredited employer, you can enjoy meaningful career opportunities while experiencing New Zealand’s strong lifestyle and natural environment.

New Zealand also offers several options for skilled professionals to transition from temporary work to permanent residence, with two pathways standing out: the Straight to Residence Visa for those in Green List Tier 1 occupations, and the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) for professionals who meet points-based criteria. Both require a valid job offer and are designed to help qualified migrants build long-term futures in New Zealand.
